I think they're co-patenting new products with some of these big companies...smart move really. They get royalties for every product that's sold and don't have to invest tons of money in even more production equipment. The partner company does all the legwork, HCTI sits and collects revenues.
Eventually someone buys them out so they get ownership of the patents (plus the original patents) and they no longer have to pay royalties on all sales. PLUS, the purchasing company would be getting paid the royalties from all their competitors.
