To hap's inference, if not for the US, Japan would have invaded, occupied and subjugated Australia, i agree, hap, says it while experts widely disagree.

Most importantly we most probably will not see wars as devastating as WW1 and WW11 again. That is a good thing. :)
bulldzr -- we're all very fortunate that Hitler made the mistake of invading the Soviet Union when he did, and that the Soviet Union was able to inflict decisive damage/losses on Hitler's forces in response -- in campaigns which included what hopefully will continue to stand for a very long time as the greatest battles ever fought in human history
Well let's just say in Europe I believe Russia had more to do with our winning in the European theater than we did. Germany lost about a half million soldiers fighting the US and Britain. Yet in one battle against Russia which Germany won they lost 1/2 million soldiers in the Battle of Stalingrad. Just on the battle against Russia which Russia won Germany lost 2.3 million soldiers. Russia lost between 8.7 million soldiers (their military estimate) and 14 million soldiers (some historian estimates). Russia also lost between 10 and 20 million civilians. We owe a great debt to Russia in helping us win WWII.
