EPA fines coal power plants that are shut down but still have the smoke stacks. The University I attended used coal for electricity and steam heat for decades. They switched to Geothermal power couple years ago. The coal generation plant has been dismantled but the smoke stacks remain. The EPA fines the university $500k per year for the smoke stacks. This is how they are killing coal. A smarter choice would have been to leave the coal generation capability in place. It worked for over 100 yrs was a cheap back up. The pile of coal could have sat for 100 more yrs and still burn just as hot if needed.
