#39015 RE: MDuffy #39000

MDuffy, EOS isn't using FFT to "bypass patent infrigement" (sic). In the Sigma Labs patent US 20100288734 A1, "Controlled weld pool volume control of welding processes" the requirement for assessing the weld pool oscillation frequency is referenced as a necessary part of the process, but doesn't stipulate how that is to be accomplished. Thought the paper by Y.Shi, G.Zhang et.al. ((Laser-Vision-Based Measurement and Analysis of Weld Pool Oscillation Frequency in GTAW-P) was a good explanation of just how FFT could be used for that purpose, and that it MIGHT be what EOS is doing, which is fine.
The takeaway is this: according to Chris Witty, the EOS SW and the Sigma Labs SW are complementary--not incompatible.
I'm not sure how this will be borne out in practice, other than to make a sideline observation that Sigma's SW appears to be superior to EOS's in it's ablility to consolidate and process large datasets and output single-valued pass-fail results. For example, who has time to go through a "flipbook" for each part built? Collecting data is easy, reducing that data to useful results is where Sigma's SW shines. IMO...
