Anything is possible, and this can't be discounted. Hard to see how, though. Different hardware, same symptoms.
Edit:
Stupid compiler tricks, maybe? Some "enhancement" that means good benchmark scores? Of course, that would mean the drivers would have to be compiled with Intel's compiler. Which Intel almost certainly did with their stuff, but would IBM use Intel's compiler?
