There is no excuse for SPEC not releasing the retired SPEC_CPU_2000 for free now


I certainly agree (and at the same time releasing SPEC{89,92,95} might be
interesting if only for studying older papers).

I guess the issue is that the SPEC benchmarks are a collection of programs
that are copyrighted. SPEC was given the right to use these programs and
associated data, so they'd have to go through the process of getting the
approval of the original copyright holders before making a release.
