There are libraries too and you can optimize for specific processor generations.

ICC provides a substantial boost for the Linux kernel.

However, it doesn't play well with GNU tools so it's a bit of a beast to use it. If I were Intel, I'd make it free and add all of the GNU-compatibility support to make it "look like" gcc.
