What a meaningless statement ! It implies that companies which did not issue options made handsome profits, and those that issued options had a poor return on shareholders capital !
Regarding Microsoft change, it is not a change at all. The granting of restricted stock is disguised option ! Same old wine in a new bottle ! But the tax treatment for the employee will be different. He will be taxed on the restricted stock even though he cannot sell it.
