I think you need to update your dividend tax info, at least for the US. It is now taxed the same as capital gains.

Anyhow, my post was not to present the differences between stock buyback vs. dividend distribution, but rather to point out that both are a valid option for Microsoft and both result in a similar gain to the investor. Of course, as there are other pressures on the stock price, the $1 per share can get overwhelmed by other considerations, both good and bad.
