The iPhone lines are huge sellers so customers may grumble at battery life but they're still buying them up at a fast clip. There are options of course - you can get a number of battery-cases from Mophie and others or you can use an external charging stick.
Making the phone thin allows those that want a thin device that can live with less battery life that option and those that want a thicker device with more battery life have that option.
