I really think it is a difference of style. I would write the letter, but then I write EVERYTHING and analyze EVERYTHING.

My way of thinking is that if you can show them on paper that it is a fair offer, you have a much better chance of them accepting it as opposed to just lowballing it by $25K (or whatever it was). I would think you would have no chance that they would accept that. They MIGHT come back with a counter offer if they are not super offended, but if I was unwilling to pay more, then what is the point of that?

My only hope would be that they are rational and reasonable and scared. And, if they are, my letter would possibly convince them that this was the best they could expect.

But, that is just me. The odds are either way they will feel insulted IMO. But, if you want a deal, you always have to run the risk of insulting someone. That is why you have a realtor - so they can smooth over it.
