PBDE mimics the natural hormone, binding with transthyretin, a protein crucial to normal thyroid hormone function. The thyroid is central to brain development.

In fact the pcb dioxin receptor has been known since 1988 or so and is entirely unrelated to the thyroid receptor, being no more related than estrogens.

there are some binding overlaps, but the free concentration of these things is so low that there is no competition in nature. people thaought there would be some competitive problems before they realized there was a whole other circuit.

the pcb receptor also controls fat and fat metabolism.

Because of this glaring and major incorrectness in the article, it is hard to know how much else is messed up
