Our SPECTRUM Government Research Cigarettes

We were chosen to be a subcontractor for a government contract between RTI International (“RTI”) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (“NIDA”) to supply altered nicotine research cigarettes (from very low to high) cigarettes to NIDA. These government research cigarettes are distributed to researchers free of charge under the mark SPECTRUM. Goodrich Tobacco has thus far delivered approximately 12 million SPECTRUM research cigarettes. We received a purchase order for an additional 5.5 million SPECTRUM research cigarettes that will be manufactured and shipped in January 2014.

Q1 2014
The Company was chosen to be a subcontractor for a 5-year government contract between RTI International (“RTI”) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (“NIDA”) to supply NIDA research cigarettes. These government research cigarettes are distributed under the Company’s mark, SPECTRUM. In September 2013, the Company received a purchase order for 5.5 million SPECTRUM research cigarettes that were shipped in January 2014. Total revenue from this order was approximately $448,000. A down payment of $179,014 was received in the fourth quarter of 2013 and was recorded as deferred revenue on the Company’s balance sheet at December 31, 2013. The Company delivered approximately 12 million SPECTRUM research cigarettes during the years ended December 31, 2012 and 2011 and recognized the related revenue of approximately $807,000. There were no SPECTRUM cigarettes delivered during the year ended December 31, 2013.

Q3 revs I expect to be 5-6 million. Launch in those other countries in Europe must be happening in september though.

Somehow I doubt XXII is going to make as much on research cigs for the government as Marlboro makes per cig. I wouldn't be surprised to find that they sold them at or near cost. It's still a notable event for Q3, but its not even certain that payment will be rendered during this Q. Regardless I think those who are counting on it for a substantial revenue source will ultimately be disappointed.
