Ahmed Mohamed, the Muslim teen from Texas who was suspended earlier this week because a teacher thought his homemade clock was a bomb, will not be returning to the school that suspended him.
The case sparked claims of racial profiling and outrage across the country, with some influential people — including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and President Obama, who invited him to the White House — showing Ahmed, 14, support.
That invite is drawing sharp criticism from a 13-year-old boy in Georgia. CJ Pearson has never been a fan of the president. In this case, he sees a double standard.
CJ is from the Augusta area, and his name was trending on Facebook overnight for his latest YouTube video [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN5Lj_74u38 (below; non-YouTube version embedded)].
"When cops are gunned down, you don't invite them to the White House. You never did. But when a Muslim builds a clock, come on by. What is this world you're living in?" he said in the video.
CJ goes on to say the invitation to Ahmed fits the president's agenda.
By Friday morning, the video, posted Wednesday, had been viewed more than 330,000 times.
It's the latest in a series of videos from CJ, who labeled himself a conservative at the age of 8. His website [ http://cjpearson.org/ ] claims a Facebook [ https://www.facebook.com/TheCJPearson ] base of more than 29,000 followers and a viewership of more than 2 million on his YouTube channel. His Facebook page shows more than 52,000 people like the page.
For his part, Ahmed said he will accept the president's invitation, which was posted on Twitter. The president called his homemade clock "cool" and asked the teen to bring it to the White House.
Police in Irving, Texas, do not plan to pursue criminal charges against Ahmed.
His real mistake, of course, was trusting in a teacher to be an educator instead of a bigot. That trust was misplaced; the teacher immediately interpreted Mohamed’s work as something terroristic and dangerous, instead of what it was: A creation by a boy who was, even at the time of his being taken away in handcuffs, wearing a NASA t-shirt proclaiming his obvious interest in all things tech-sci.
Interestingly enough, despite this alleged concern that Mohamed was holding something dangerous, the school was not alerted, placed on lockdown, or otherwise made safe against a potential bomb blast. Mohamed himself was arrested in the school office, with no one apparently very concerned that a bomb might go off at any time. Had his teacher any awareness of the longstanding commitment in the Muslim culture to beneficial contributions to science and technology–including clocks–instead of an apparent reflexive bigotry related to Mohamed’s name and religion, this educator might have seen Mohamed’s work in a more appropriate context. On top of all of that, he made some significant contributions to musical understanding and sensory perception and had an intuitively correct opinion about the foundations of chemistry that contrasted directly with widely held beliefs of his time.

When a boy with a scientific bent shows originality and motivation, when he takes things apart and rebuilds them or develops contraptions of his own, in the western world, many people would draw an immediate comparison between that boy and, say, Thomas Edison or Nicola Tesla.
But when a boy with a certain kind of name—like Ahmed Mohamed—shows up at his school with something he built himself, a clock, no less, his teacher didn’t look at him with pride and think, “Another Al-Jazari. That’s wonderful.” No. That teacher calls the cops instead.
