This is the norm in the industry as the MM's aren't paid directly so they have to "scalp the ticket". The seller could have used more sophisticated trading practices such as changing MM's (although they can't direct a sale) and not showing "size" orders on the ask. If these two practises were implemented (in my opinion) the stock price would be higher. The MM doesn't care what the price level is or whether the stock is trending up or down only the degree of spread matters. The MM's legally cannot hold inventory on a "one sided pink" thus they have no interest in manipulating the price one way or another and from a short perspective there isn't enough percentage of volatility and volume to interest a short position.
