I rolled back to Win7 for pretty much the reasons you cited.

I did that a week ago. I removed the KB* update and it got rid of it and the icon. Then guess what happened? It came back in the next Windows update and had to reboot my machine. So it wasted my time removing it and re-installing it.

There may be a way to remove an update permanently but the articles that I looked at basically told me to do what I did.

This stuff is in the general category of Nagware.
