Dale C -- well, following the election, there is the transition, a rather involved/extensive process in which the entire incumbent executive team regularly meets with, thoroughly briefs, and otherwise shows the ropes to the respective entire incoming team (which is generally at least initially pretty well filled out by that point) -- and beginning at the latest by the time they've made it out of their respective party conventions (and thus before their debates) and continuing through the election, the candidates, along with their top national security advisors/staff, receive regular thorough national security briefings from the incumbent administration
so the entry when the new president dives/is thrown from the high board into the pool of being president at least should be a wee bit more graceful than that
