New Horizons West is a new, educational non-profit located in Animas, New Mexico. Formed in July, 2009, the name of the organization comes from the current NASA mission to Pluto, New Horizons, which will place a robotic spacecraft in close proximity to Pluto and its three moons sometime in 2015.
NHW was started by Gene Turner, a developer in the region and an amateur astronomer. He is currently administering 300+ acres of farmland, the construction of residential and retail facilities in Animas and Lordsburg, NM, and the development of an RV resort in western Hidalgo County.
Mr. Turner believes in the importance of science education for the future of our nation and is excited about the prospect of using his facility for hands on learning. He has experience in the astronomy field, and has partnered with Astronomy Magazine in establishing an observatory at his development site in Animas.
In its brief life, NHW has already sponsored site visits by people from around the region and nation including high school groups, adult education classes from the Tucson area, and national group sponsored by Astronomy Magazine. These have been done in preparation for the establishment of a more permanent program that will seek to provide science programs in regional schools with the resources to pursue inquiry-based, hands-on learning programs.
