I believe there is also a professor at Oxford and one in Germany doing the same things as well.
There are many universities with programs like this.

Reason is that the worms are very easy to breed ands prolific.
They can produce enough in a short period of time to supply a college class with worms to experiment on.
Their gestation period is very short.
The growth to maturity is very fast
They are small and easy to store as eggs
Their eggs are quite large(for eggs) so it makes them easy to work with. Their DNA is very well mapped since science has used them for experiments for quite a while.

It is the perfect medium for college students.
Once spidersilk was spun from them every university in the world would have a great topic for a GM class.

I am sure there are dozens nobody has heard about yet.
