#7675 RE: sgolds #7674

Sgolds, Re: the history of the i432 and i860 shows that Intel knows how to cut losses and move on when the have to - Itanium will have to succeed and outcompete x86 designs, or Intel will do the same again.

Considering the amount that Intel has spent to get where it is today with Itanium, it would be foolish to quit now. Madison has many times the infrastructure that McKinley did when it was introduced, and I'm willing to bet that a year from now, the infrastructure will be even greater. We don't even know how well Madison will sell, but there are many barriers being lowered with continued development of the ecosystem, as well as the much higher performance being offered. I think that many businesses who have been holding out until this point will start investing into checking out the new architecture. It's worth it for Intel to continue their investments in Itanium over the next couple years to see if end user adoption increases due to the efforts so far. No one is going to pull the plug until that data is available. To think otherwise is a 'Droid fantasy.
