I don't see a need for tighter integration for such a niche.

there will be a quad 64 bit arm + gpu with a very tightly integrated best in class :-) fpga next year. maybe intel was just pissed that altera couldn't tape-out on intel fabs a similar chip and wanted to show x86 could be better; who knows ?

I think it's a fab play.

TSMC has too many customers to have that make any economic sense.
