I don't blame anyone either. Joe Shmoe could give a rats ass about the payments landscape. Only reason many of us are probably so aware of the state of mobile payments is because of our investment.
Adoption will require merchants to play hard ball with CC companies, and let some benefits trickle down to the little guy. Otherwise, nobody has a reason to use it, and won't. I.E. Applepay.
