Comb, let me just add that AFAIK there are two practical and widely used applications where 64 bits will help right now. This is 128-bit security encription and Java. I don't know why Java is running so well on Opteron but it does. Maybe it's not 64-bit related, maybe Java's indirect addressing appreciates the low latency memory access. You have much more cache misses with Java then with C.
