Kinda think of him as a bookie in sports betting. He makes a cut off the spread between the buy and sell. Obviously he has more clout than a bookie. But the mms are there to create the market for retail buyers like you and I, as well as institutional or hedge funds. Also makes flat fees paid From brokerages to buy and sell securities and such for their clients.

Better yet. Do yourself a favor and look up Level 2 quotes. Check with your brokerage firm to see if they offer L2, a lot of times it is free for real time. Ihub also offers one that I used for years. Good luck :)
