I remember reading about the railroad cases, state commerce case (Ogden) in the early to mid 1800s, and it seems that the problem with political influence in court cases was a lot worse back then. Vanderbilt at one point was fighting over judges with other factions on getting competing injunctions issued. In one instance, people on the other side had to flee to New Jersey to avoid arrest in New York. In the Ogden (steamship case) case he had to keep hiding every time they made a stop to avoid getting arrested. There was one time a constable was going to arrest him on his own boat, but they left the pier and the guy couldn't complete the arrest. Some newspapers even carried stories about 'steam ship sightings' as he continued to conduct business up and down the coast, while avoiding arrest.
