There is complex and technical science for the technology. Very much like the acoustic sensor, there is decay from the distance traveled by the information signal. There has to be a very sensitive sensor and calculation for loss to accurately capture the information. This is more than those thermal sensors firemen have in confirming a fire is out.

I recall reading some of their studies on thermal but I'm too lazy to go searching. In the meantime, however, look at the open test bed for sensor result from EWI where they ACCOMPLISHED REPEATABILITY. Sigma Labs was involved in this work:

EWI is beginning an intense period of sensor evaluation on the sensor test bed with our project partners UNC-Charlotte, Georgia Tech, Stratonics, Wyle Labs, B6 Sigma, Rolls-Royce, GE Aviation and EOS North America. Initial sensor screening will be complete by the end of December with additional focused testing, refinement, and evaluation over the following 9 months.
