Though what you say makes sense theoretically, it does not stand correct from the reading of the sentence grammatically. If you were to take your theoretical perspective to be true; the sentence spoken would be incorrect. To do so properly from your perspective, the plural of year would be grammatically correct and have had to be used and spoken.
