The most popular technology can be more profitable/successful than the best technology. Throughout the history of modern technology there are instances where a technologically superior alternative was beaten out by its inferior rival — for example, Betamax lost to VHS video cassette recorders, and Macintosh computers gained only a fraction of the market share of Windows-based PCs. In most cases, the winning alternative was able to capture market share more quickly and establish a critical mass of users.
