#11934 RE: conix #11931

"Judging by the article below, the military is impressed...."????

"Lt. Col. Candy Wilson"? Seriously? There's a colonel named "Candy"?

In any case, it sounds like "Candy," the clinic administrator of the "779th Medical Group Acupuncture Center," is the ONE who is "impressed" more so than the "military."

I found it humorous that the moron doesn't even know how the device is supposed to work:

"The treatment, referred to as nerve scrambler therapy, works by sending electric signals through the skin, to stimulate healthy nerves that are not affected by pain."

Way to go, Candy! Nice to know that MY tax dollars are giving the mentally retarded jobs!

Now, in case anyone isn't aware, Candy and her QUACK doctors are currently under attack:

damn the torpedoes full steam ahead

Say what:

"As noted, the Department must follow TRICARE guidelines to determine health benefits that may be offered to beneficiaries. The TRICARE guidelines require that therapies offered as part of the benefit must be medically necessary, safe and effective. At this time, there are INSUFFICIENT internal evaluation and reported results to determine whether the CAM programs being provided in the MTFs meet these criteria . Therefore, the MHS will evaluate CAM therapies for safety and effectiveness PRIOR to any FURTHER expansion of CAM programs. Meanwhile, the MHS will continue to review the literature, the findings and recommendations of external organizations such as the IOM and NCCAM, and internal results of CAM program assessments to identify those CAM programs that may enhance conventional therapies. Identified programs PROVEN safe and EFFECTIVE will be considered for widespread implementation in the MHS as resources allow."

The HIGHLIGHTING is mine. No doubt Candy is feeling a little stressed right now since she might have to start working in a REAL medical clinic in the near future! And pardon me while I pat myself on the back since the flood of letters I released a couple of years ago complaining about the abuse of veterans by employing "CAM BS" -- more appropriately called QUACK medicine -- at taxpayers expense may have had a role to play in getting that study initiated.

In any case, relevant for CTTC is that part about NO FURTHER EXPANSION (pat, pat, pat!) until evaluated for EFFECTIVENESS and goodness only knows how long THAT might take! Oh, wait! Maybe they HAVE evaluated it:

current EXCLUDED list

What do I spy but "the following specific services are excluded under any circumstance":

Acupuncture
Alternative treatments
Chiropractic (HALLELUJAH!!!)
Experimental or unproven procedures

And I looked ALL OVER Tricare's and the Defense Health Agency's websites and could not find a SINGLE mention of EITHER "calmare" OR "scrambler."

In other words, I don't think I'd be looking for any more orders for calmares from the military anytime soon.
