It is pretty mainstream for anyone.
People think companies like spiber or amsilk must be super high tech but not when it comes to the subject of their research. What they are doing is common place in the world today as can be seen below.
Not that a middle schooler could make spider goo but that the ecoli is only being used because it is simple. So simple that IMO most of universities are doing ecoli/spider work.

[Biotechnology &
Recombinant DNA Techniques
For Middle and High School Students and Teachers

To understand how the acquisition of a new gene changes the phenotype of a cell, we will
investigate several recombinant DNA techniques. This will require that you gain an
understanding of how restriction enzymes work and how they are used to achieve sitespecific
cleavage of DNA; what technique is used to induce uptake of plasmid DNA by
E. coli cells, resulting in a changing cellular phenotype; and how to isolate plasmid DNA
from the E. coli cells that harbor it.

After all if you really wanted to produce mass amounts of spider protein why not use a hagfish? They are protein factories. They are large enough to produce any molecule and they can produce pounds of it from 1 fish
