Fannie Mae made its much-anticipated site selection for relocating its national headquarters in Washington, DC. The mortgage GSE announced it has selected Carr Properties' proposal for the redevelopment of The Washington Post's current headquarters at 1150 15th St. NW.

Carr plans to demolish the existing buildings on the prominent corner site to make way for the residential mortgage creditor's new 700,000-square-foot headquarters, a move that will consolidate Fannie Mae's operations into a single location from the nearly 1 million square feet it currently occupies in several buildings along Wisconsin Avenue in the District's Uptown submarket.

Carr Properties expects to begin redeveloping the property in 2016 following the The Washington Post's move to its new 1301 K St. location. Fannie Mae plans to put its current massive headquarters complex at 3900 Wisconsin Ave. NW up for sale.

Fannie Mae said it chose the 15th St. location over three other competing locations because it "provides attractive financial terms and gives the company the flexibility to adapt to changes to future workspace needs," according to Fannie Mae Senior Vice President and COO Maureen Davenport, in a statement issued by the GSE.
