I think that Apple has had an efficiency advantage for many years without necessarily having to work as hard to do it via their operating system. Windows just plain does a lot by default - one of the first things that I generally do with a new Windows system is to turn off the stuff that aren't needed or wanted.

Apple had that MacBook Air lead for something like five years before everyone else started making similar products. It's not like they really did much to improve the Air over those five years - and they still haven't improved it that much when the competition came out with similar products but they still seem to sell a ton of them.

I think that Microsoft has done something pretty innovative with the Surface (though I don't think that it's for me). I like some of Dell's 3-in-1 devices too. But Mac OSX is the OS of choice for me right now until Microsoft can show me something better. Just something as good as Time Machine or Spaces would help.
