The Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations require potential licensed producers to notify their municipality, local fire official, and local law enforcement. Notification must also be provided to local authorities upon any change in the status of a licence (i.e. issuance, suspension or revocation) within 30 days of the change.

Licensed producers must comply with all federal, provincial and municipal laws and by-laws, including municipal zoning by-laws. It is the responsibility of the municipality to conduct the relevant inspections for compliance with by-laws such as zoning as the MMPR does not include zoning requirements. Health Canada contacts municipalities which have applicant(s) to confirm they received notification from the potential licensed producer.
