Northern beaches teen in hospital after agreeing to be set on fire at party

A young man is recovering in hospital with excessive burns after agreeing to be set on fire at a party on Sydney's northern beaches on Sunday morning.
The 18-year-old man was with friends at a party on Essilia Street in Collaroy Plateau when he allegedly agreed to be set alight with aerosols and flammable liquids at about 12:20am, police said.
He suffered "superficial but excessive burns" to his back and was taken by ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition. Police said the man was still receiving treatment on Sunday morning and was yet to speak with them about the incident.
Police confirmed they were called to the party where they arrested another 18-year-old man.
He was taken to Dee Why Police Station and is currently assisting with inquiries.
Last year, an internet-driven trend, often referred to as the "fire challenge", became a dangerous craze among US teenagers. Young people who took up the challenge typically doused themselves in a flammable liquid and set themselves on fire while their friends watched on and filmed the incident. The video would then be uploaded to social media.
It is not known whether the incident in Essilia Street was based on this craze, or if it was filmed.
