dude. there is a Gristides in my BUILDING. I never said anything about outer boroughs. I'm just saying it's a crappy store. The one that USED to be on 64th & WEA (this has since closed) was right by the Lincoln Center Projects (who were my neighbors) --there is affluent and poor all over the city. My neighborhood right now is amazing; I live across the street from the WTC site. I also pay big money for my apartment. But I will tell you that the people shopping in Gristides are either 1) getting milk, eggs, etc because they need things for their dishes or 2) are the nannies of these families doing shopping. The real money in NYC grocery is Fresh Direct or Whole Foods. Even Food Emporium (a step up from Gristides) is closing it's stores. get informed buddy. and get your facts straight about what I did and did not say.

Best comparison in my view is Gelson's. A clean, upper-middle class grocery store.

When I was young in NY, I rarely shopped at Gristedes because it was pricier than other chains.

Gristedes is not even in the same realm as Whole Foods. Whole Foods is natural, healthy food. Gristedes is just a smaller, classier local grocery chain.

Gristedes is far from high end, especially compared (and shouldn't be) to Whole Foods. Gristedes is over priced, mismanaged, sells out of date products with poor customer service. They mainly cater to convenience and EBT or food cards, whatever they call them. They are strategically located in grief stricken neighborhoods who live on government assistance. Effluent they are not, unless you're talking about wastewater?
The good thing is volume of product which seems to be the target. Based on that, two thumbs up.
