HANetf’s Tom Bailey on Future of European Defence UCITS ETF (ARMY)

HANetf head of research Tom Bailey talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the launch of the new Future of European Defence UCITS ETF (LSE:ARMY, XETRA:ARMY, EURONEXT:ARMY). Bailey explained the rationale behind launching a regionally focused fund, following the success of HANetf’s Global Future of Defence UCITS ETF (NATO). He said: “We think for many investors it kind of resonates with that whole theme of building up your defence sector via a European ETF with a European company.” Bailey noted that European defence spending rose by 11.7% between 2023 and 2024, outpacing global growth of 7.5%, with Germany’s own spend increasing 23%. This uptick is attributed to geopolitical shifts and the drive for strategic autonomy. Bailey highlighted a growing preference within Europe to source defence equipment domestically, reducing reliance on US firms, which currently account for around 60% of European defence procurement. He also pointed to political developments in the US, including recent tariff announcements and perceived isolationist policies, as reinforcing Europe's need for self-reliance in defence. The ARMY ETF is currently listed on the London Stock Exchange, Xetra (Germany), and Euronext Paris, with plans to launch in Italy. Alkane hits high-grade gold at Tomingley

Alkane Resources Ltd managing director Nic Earner talked with Proactive about recent high-grade gold intercepts and ongoing resource expansion at the Tomingley gold operations in New South Wales. Earner detailed strong results from underground drilling at both the Caloma and Roswell zones, with intercepts showing multiple grams per tonne over substantial widths. “We’ve had some very, very high-grade hits… tens of metres at plus ten grams in Roswell,” he noted, highlighting the significant contribution these results will make to near-term reserve updates and future production planning. The company is confident these results will support mine life extensions well into the 2030s. Reserve and resource updates, including for Caloma One and Caloma Two, are expected in the August–September period, following analysis of the June 30 data. Earner also touched on Alkane’s recent financial performance, stating: “It’s been a great quarter… we had a great cash build,” helped by strong production and a high Australian-dollar gold price. He confirmed guidance remains on track, with 17,500 ounces produced and expectations of reaching 19,000 ounces by quarter end. Alkane continues to advance permitting for the highway relocation and is actively progressing exploration across both the Boda-Kaiser project and Tomingley region. New Era Helium advances strategic development plans across Helium and AI infrastructure operations

At the Pecos Slope Field, New Era Helium is actively engaged with its midstream gatherer and processor following a recent transition in both the ownership and management of that third-party entity. Discussions remain constructive, with NEH focused on securing an outcome that is both operationally efficient and financially beneficial. However, Gray acknowledged that as a result of these negotiations, along with delays in securing project financing during the company’s recent de-SPAC process, the construction timeline for the Pecos Slope Plant has been extended. To mitigate potential delays and maintain momentum toward monetization, NEH has initiated contingency planning for helium offtake agreements. These efforts are running in parallel with construction timelines and are designed to ensure flexibility in commercial arrangements. The company remains in active dialogue with current counterparties while exploring new agreements to unlock long-term value and ensure a robust path to revenue generation from its helium assets. NEH stands out as one of only two companies trading on a major U.S. exchange with both proved and probable helium reserves, positioning it as a rare and de-risked opportunity in the helium investment landscape.
