Do you think the crazy action during the last couple of minutes reflected actions by the market-maakers themselves or orders being filled. I find it hard to understand that the latter can be the case since there would be little time to enter new orders.

Both probably. There are brokers out there where you can put in orders in a few seconds like IB for example. I don't need to fill out a lenghty buy order mask at IB, I make virtually 2 clicks and the order is in. Works very fast.
