If you place an order to sell at market price (no price limit) when there is no bid, the MMs are in control and they can price it at their will depending how much are they in need of new shares... those trades that you see at a tick below the ask are, most likely, trades among MMs. Why pay 0.00009 or 0.00008 when you can pay 0.00001 or 0.000001.. right?
