Agreed, in my opinion I understood why Putin took over the Crimea, if I remember my Russian History correctly, it was Peter the Great that initiated the Crimea as Russia's outlet to the sea.
About a half century later it was Catherine who continued that tradition of sending Russia's fleet against the Turks.
But after the Crimea, Putin tried to use a military presence to garner the support he needed to gain further control over the Ukraine.
In many parts of the Ukraine there is not much love for Russia from a historical perspective, Stalin use to slaughter them by the millions, but I would have to take refresher course on Russian History to venture any further in this discussion.
