struft... prodded by your post i did look into Nutanix... quite an interesting story... what i learned is likely already known by many on this board, but for non-tech types like myself i'll put my two pennies on the table...

so there is already significant disruption in the storage business... i gather the old days, when storage was storage, and IT guys put the pieces together is fading fast... OVRL was an old tape storage company trapped in what was... probably explains a lot regarding their revenue issues as an independent entity...

VMware, among others, introduced converged storage from what i understand... and Nutanix, among others, pushed the converged envelope to create hyperconverged storage... here is my take on what this trend means... storage as independent unit was integrated by the IT department into the overall system of the company... the IT guys made it all work together (at least on the good days)... this older model provides a company with the most flexibility as long as they have the IT capacity to shape it... but that can get expensive and so it really works best for companies that can afford a top notch IT department...

Converged storage systems are more integrated, require less from the IT department and are less flexible... Hyperconverged are even more integrated/automated, require even less from IT and are ever less flexible... but they are fast, efficient, scalable... they work... medium sized entities appear to love them so much that VMware was forced to respond to Nutanix by introducing a hyperconverged option at this year's VMware conference... btw, Nutanix was not invited to VMware conference this year apparently because they are now perceived as too big a threat...

Sphere 3d v50 model, just introduced, is targeting smaller businesses which are also moving in this direction with companies like Simplivity...

Because Nutanix is private i was not able to find revenue figures... they have made run rates available at times, but that is all thus far... nonetheless, it is clear that their growth has been phenomenal... and their most recent round of financing provides further affirmation of their business model...

so what does this mean for Sphere 3d? V3 by itself was interesting technology, but largely left out of the new hyperconverged storage model... Overland/Tandeberg by themselves were useful storage options from the past, but largely left out of the new hyperconverged storage model...

The synergy of Sphere, V3, Overland and Tandberg is clearer in light of this trend toward hyperconvergence... the new ANY with their line of products are well positioned to compete in this intriguing and changing space... 2015 should be interesting indeed... Amerifirst speaking about their brand new hyperconverged storage system from Sphere 3d - describing it as "killer fast" and highly automated...

The best part of this story for me is that ANY is not "just" a storage company... i do think the company is well-positioned to achieve significant revenue in the hyperconverged storage space... but glassware is applicable to much more than storage... so Sphere is Nutanix, but more than Nutanix imo... time will tell...
