I know what he is talking about and I appreciate your response.

Not everyone is married, owns property, has kids, etc... When you just work, live out of a suitcase/hotels, and your employer pays for everything... Well you can fill in the rest... Deductions are hard to come by.

Then once you make a certain amount in annual income, you lose almost any remaining deductions... You lose a bunch around 77K, 150K, 200K, and 250K. So yes, $3,000 can help...
