I used to mainly place and receive calls using Talkatone (free VOIP App) when I had a prepaid smartphone where the calls weren't unlimited and free. I can do this with Google Hangouts now on iOS or Android.
I have unlimited, free calls on my iPhone now so I just use the Verizon connection but I'd consider VOIP if I had reception problems in certain areas of my house.
We use our iPads as phones and no longer have a landline.
