I will share with you what I was told . I was very frustrated with the change in direction and this may help you make some kind of determination I know it helped me.
I said why not reward shareholders by getting the first indication to market then expand from there?
"Honestly it's a different evolving market and it forced us to adjust and look at the big picture ."
This is a paraphrase but I will use quotations for emphasis.
1. "Initial sales may have been anemic our research indicated we might come in around 10 percent of market for our only procedure."
2 "Hospital GPO etc. wanted more bang for their buck and plainly stated that fact !"
3. "The FDA although thrilled with our device strongly advocated for more indications as it was obviously well suited for them, The off labeled usages that have been occurring with the Da Vinci have been frowned upon so why not avoid that scenario altogether by gaining approval for multiple indications in the abdomen from the very beginning ?"
4. "After gaining this additional approval our goal for market share becomes significantly higher . A number was mentioned just over 55 percent "( no idea how that was arrived at )
5. "Our vision for this company is more long term I can see this company one day making use of drone technology and having not only underserved areas but also military application saving our boys lives through telesurgery. Is that a long way away Yes at this time but could this technology eventually go this direction ,,,, certainly ."
That last comment shocked me initially but I do think they have knocked around some forward thinking outside the box ideas !!!! In retrospect I decided I liked it and on board with it. ( and I figured Cheerios will love this )
They are aware of how this was going to be recieved and also felt like the true poor performance of management would be to not make the hard choices and back this up a little bit.
Every conversation he has used "from here forward our intention is to under promise and over deliver "
Chew on that and take it for what it's worth
