Don't forget about CMEs (solar flares) that give off an electro magnetic pulse and fry everything that uses electricity. EMPs don't just come from solar flares either. A nuke can be detonated in the ionosphere and rain down EMPs all over the country.
I love solar. No doubt about that. But it is of course just another temporary solution to providing us with energy. I believe sometime down the line someone will finish what Nikola Tesla started at Wardenclyff and we will have truly free wireless energy. Don't know how his towers would fair against an EMP though.
