The canvass is expected to take all day Wednesday and could go into Thursday; there are also provisional ballots to be taken into account.
It remains to be seen whether there will be a recount. Virginia does not have automatic recounts; a recount must be requested by the trailing candidate.
According to Virginia law, if the margin of votes is less than half a percent of the total vote, the candidate can appeal to the State Board of Elections to request a recount, which the government will finance. If the margin is greater than 0.5 percent but less than one percent of total vote, the candidate may also request a recount, but but pay for it him- or herself.
The 2014 Senate run is Gillespie's first attempt at seeking public office. He has previously worked behind the scenes for former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, for former presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and as chairman of the Republican National Committee.
