#4297 RE: jhalada #4291

Itanium is looking at the tail lights of just about all of the competing 64 bit processors still on the market: POWER, Opteron, Xeon, and probably Sparc too.

What I see is IPF servers growing revenue at 90+% while x86
servers grow at under 7% and SPARC shrinks at around 10%.
IPF's main competitor, POWER, went from ~10% growth in 4Q05
to falling 9% in 1Q06 while IPF sales growth is reaching triple
figure percentages in important high IT spending growth markets.
In Japan IPF sales were already running 20% ahead of POWER
and 50% ahead of SPARC in late 2005.

Keep in mind all of this growth and momentum was happening
with an old MPU design on even older systems. In a few months
Montecito will be released in new systems from HP, SGI and
others and IPF will take a huge leap ahead in performance
per socket, per $, and per Watt. No doubt IPF server sales
growth rates will accelerate even further despite being far
ahead of the pack already.
