I was under the impression that the POS readers in the USA were not widely deployed for other than simple swiping. Anyone have the numbers? Also I was unaware that the new ones would be compatible in HW/SW with all the competing choices. Is this for real?
If ApplePay is really just an Apple walled garden over ordinary NFC then it should be possible in theory to have a POS terminal accept a variety of things including Chip and Pin.
However it will make life hell for the POS HW/SW manufacturers to get the bugs out of all the complex competing configurations.
