Sure. Here are some "companies in the industry with a better track record of success."
-Both BMW and Nissan have been very vocal about their future plans for EVs. Both companies are proving to have a decent EV strategy so far with the Leaf and the i3.
-BYD -- even Warren Buffett is on this investment
-SolarCity is clearly going to benefit from EV sales and anyone who believes EVs are a big part of the future almost certainly also believes in the potential for solar.
-And then, of course, there is Tesla.
All of these companies are publicly traded.

Nissan, BYD and BMW don't compare so well on a 5 year chart because they are not NEV pure plays. They have incumbent ICE divisions that hold them back, specially in China
