I'll bet those that were given shares of FB were kept informed of when the IPO was occurring and when the restrictions would be lifted in order to be able to trade those shares. Likewise I am willing to bet that when Facebook was getting ready to go public that their announcements to the general public as well as insiders that held options were made so that they truthfully aligned with their progress actions of getting listed.
Honestly you shouldn't promise something to your child and not follow through... It's one thing to say 'well see' or 'maybe' but to say 'I promise' and then don't follow through makes you loose all respect to those that you made the promise to.
