Pollution aside, cleaner fuels make for longer engine life, the byproducts of internal combustion create waste in the oil that wears the engine parts, more efficiency results in longer engine life and reduced operating costs. There were many innovations over the years that resulted in much higher mileage and they were all bought up by big oil and shelved, they have no interest in our lowering fuel costs and prolonging engine life.
